We install wet rooms in Widnes, WA8. Widnes is in the borough of Halton, so if you are hoping for a Disabled Facilities Grant, the application goes to Halton Borough Council. We can quote and install to an occupational therapist’s recommendations, or simply fit a wet room you are paying for privately.
Two routes to a Widnes wet room
Paying privately
You contact us, we visit, and you get a written quote and plan. You choose the finishes and timing. This is the route for people planning ahead, people who do not qualify for a grant and those who simply want to get on with it.
Through a Disabled Facilities Grant
This route goes through Halton Borough Council and normally follows an occupational therapist assessment. It can take longer, because the council has its own stages, but it may help with funding for eligible people.
How the grant route usually goes
- Ask for an assessment. Contact Halton Borough Council about an occupational therapist visit. The OT looks at how the person manages and what adaptations are needed.
- Recommendations. The OT sets out what they believe is necessary, for example a level-access shower, rails and a seat.
- Means test. For adults the grant is means-tested. For disabled children it is not.
- Quotes and approval. Quotes are obtained for the work. The council approves the grant before work starts.
- Installation and sign-off. The work is carried out and checked.
Every council runs things slightly differently, and processes change, so treat this as a general outline. Halton may also offer discretionary help in some circumstances; ask them directly. We cannot promise eligibility, an amount or a timescale. Our DFG wet rooms page has more background.
Do not start work you hope a grant will pay for until the council has approved it. Work started early may not be covered.
Tenants and landlords
If you rent, your landlord must agree to the adaptation. For housing association tenants, the association may have its own process alongside, or instead of, a DFG. If you are a landlord in Widnes asked by a tenant about a wet room, we can explain what the work involves.
VAT
Some adaptations for a disabled person’s own use, such as a level-access shower, can be zero-rated for VAT. There are eligibility rules, and the customer usually signs a declaration. Check eligibility before assuming it applies.
What we design into a Widnes adaptation
- Level-access floor with slip-resistant finish and a well-placed drain
- Thermostatic shower with an adjustable handset
- Fold-down seat and rails positioned for the user
- Space for a wheelchair or carer where needed
- Comfort-height toilet and lever taps if recommended
Homes in Widnes range from terraces to semis and bungalows, so we check the floor and drainage on every visit. Upstairs bathrooms usually have timber floors suited to a shower former between the joists, while ground-floor rooms and bungalows may sit on concrete that needs a channel for the drain. Either way, the OT’s measurements for turning space and seat height shape the final layout. For broader changes, see our accessible bathrooms page.
We also cover nearby St Helens and Prescot. Read our homepage for more on wet room installation in Liverpool, Halton and Merseyside.

Frequently asked questions
Which council handles a DFG for a Widnes address?
Halton Borough Council. Widnes is in Halton, not Liverpool or St Helens. Ask Halton about an occupational therapist assessment and the Disabled Facilities Grant process.
Can I choose my own installer if I get a grant from Halton?
Councils handle this in different ways. Some let you put forward your own contractor’s quote; others use their own arrangements. Ask Halton how they work. If you can choose, we are happy to quote against the OT’s recommendations.
Is a DFG means-tested for a disabled child in Widnes?
No. Disabled Facilities Grants for children are not means-tested, though an assessment of need still applies. Adult applications are means-tested.
Can I pay for extra features on top of a grant?
Often you can choose to pay privately for upgrades beyond what the grant covers, such as different tiles. Check with the council how they handle this before work starts so everything is agreed in writing.
