We fit wet rooms in Childwall bungalows and family homes. Bungalows are often the most straightforward, because the bathroom is on the ground floor and the person using it never has to tackle the stairs. In semis we usually work upstairs on a timber floor.

Why Childwall bungalows suit wet rooms

Childwall has a good number of bungalows, and they are a natural fit for living on one level later in life. When the shower is level with the rest of the floor, a walking frame or wheelchair can roll straight in. Many people in L16 come to us because they have already decided to stay put and want the bathroom to match.

That said, bungalows have their own quirks. Some have solid floors that need channelling for a drain. Others have suspended timber floors with a shallow void, which affects how deep a shower former can go. The survey tells us which you have.

Bungalow or semi: what changes?

Question Typical bungalow Typical semi (upstairs bathroom)
Floor type Solid or suspended timber Suspended timber
How the fall is made Screed or channel, or a former in timber Pre-formed former between joists
Access for the user No stairs involved Stairs still needed, or a stairlift
Space Sometimes room to enlarge into a hall or box room Usually fixed to the existing footprint

Widening doors and making room

For wheelchair users, the bathroom door is often the first obstacle. We look at whether the doorway can be widened or the door rehung to open outwards, which also helps if someone falls inside the room. In some Childwall bungalows there is scope to take space from a hallway or cupboard; where that is possible, it can make a real difference to turning room. Our accessible bathrooms page explains the wider changes people often make.

If the room is being designed around a specific disability, see our page on disabled wet room installation.

Council help in Childwall

Childwall sits within Liverpool City Council’s area, so a Disabled Facilities Grant would be applied for there. An occupational therapist normally assesses what is needed first, and adults are means-tested. We cannot predict the result, but we can quote against the OT’s recommendations if you go down that route.

We work across south and east Liverpool, including Woolton and Wavertree. To see the full range of our accessible wet room installation in Liverpool, visit the homepage, or read up on what affects wet room cost.

Book a visit for your Childwall home

Call 07777 659786 and tell us whether it is a bungalow or a two-storey house and who the room is for. We will ring back and take it from there. You can also browse Wet Rooms Liverpool for more detail first.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bungalow wet room easier to install than an upstairs one?

Not always easier, but often simpler for the user. A ground floor means no stairs, which is the main reason many Childwall bungalow owners choose a wet room. The installation difficulty depends on the floor: solid floors may need channelling for the drain, while timber floors need enough depth for a former.

Can you make the bathroom bigger in a Childwall bungalow?

Sometimes. If there is a cupboard, hallway space or a small adjoining room, it may be possible to move a stud wall. Load-bearing walls are a different matter and would need proper structural advice. We will tell you at the visit whether enlarging the room looks realistic.

Will a wet room help with getting a wheelchair in and out?

A level floor removes the step, but turning space and door width matter just as much. We measure the room and the doorway and talk through whether the door should open outwards or be widened. If an OT has given measurements, we work to those.

Who do I contact about a grant for a Childwall property?

Liverpool City Council. Ask about a Disabled Facilities Grant and an occupational therapist assessment. If you rent, you will also need your landlord’s consent before any adaptation goes ahead.
